Our environmental education work

We help people understand the relationship between energy use, efficiency and environmental impact.

Connecting energy use with environmental questions

Understanding energy starts with knowing how it is measured, where it is used and why some consumption is unnecessary. This provides a foundation for learning about resources, emissions and different ways of supplying energy.

Our environmental education is for the public, including people learning about their homes and people working in organisations.

Our current focus

  • Measuring consumption and understanding kWh.
  • Heat loss and seasonal energy demand.
  • Standby consumption and avoidable electricity use.
  • Energy-efficiency practices and their safety limitations.
  • An introduction to environmental policy through the Climate Change Levy.

The current collection introduces these subjects through practical energy-use guides. Broader coverage of generation, emissions, low-carbon technologies and environmental claims will be added as suitable material is developed.

Understanding the limits

A lower bill, lower energy consumption and lower emissions are different outcomes. Prices, energy sources and the way impacts are measured all matter.

Our resources explain general principles. We do not assess individual properties, recommend installations or guarantee energy savings or emissions reductions.
