About the Centre for Energy Literacy
The Centre for Energy Literacy exists to improve public understanding of how the UK energy system works and to support fairer outcomes for households and businesses.
Energy affects every home and every organisation, yet it remains difficult to understand. Prices, bills, contracts, and support schemes are often complex and poorly explained. This lack of understanding can lead to avoidable harm, particularly for vulnerable households and smaller businesses.
Our role is to make energy clearer, more transparent, and easier to navigate.
Our purpose
The Centre for Energy Literacy is being established to:
- Improve understanding of electricity and gas supply in the UK
- Explain how energy markets, pricing, and billing work
- Support households experiencing difficulty with energy costs
- Promote informed decision-making through education and research
We focus on clarity, accuracy, and public benefit.
Who we serve
Our work supports two main groups:
Households
We provide clear guidance and support pathways for people struggling with energy costs, including information about rights, bills, and where to seek help.
Small and medium-sized businesses
We publish independent, educational resources to help SMEs understand energy costs, risk, and resilience — without selling products or services.
What we do — and what we don’t
What we do
- Publish plain-English educational resources
- Produce independent research and briefings
- Help households understand support options
- Work with partner organisations where appropriate
What we do not do
- Sell energy or related services
- Recommend suppliers, brokers, or products
- Accept commissions or referral fees
- Provide commercial or procurement advice
This separation protects independence and trust.
Independence and neutrality
The Centre for Energy Literacy is independent and non-commercial.
All content is written to inform, not to persuade.
We aim to explain how the system works, not to promote particular outcomes or interests.
Where opinions or interpretations are expressed, they are clearly identified and supported by evidence.
Governance and status
The Centre for Energy Literacy is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (application submitted).
We are governed by an independent board of trustees and operate for public benefit.
Details of governance arrangements, policies, and documents are published transparently.
How our work is funded
Our work is funded through a combination of grants and donations.
We do not accept funding that would compromise our independence or require us to promote commercial interests.
Transparency and accountability
We are committed to openness and accountability.
This includes:
- Publishing governance documents and policies
- Explaining how decisions are made
- Reporting on our activities and impact
We welcome feedback and scrutiny.
