Energy literacy for businesses. Support for households.
Clear, independent guidance on how the UK energy system works — and practical help for those struggling with energy costs.
What we do
The UK energy system is complex by design. That complexity creates risk for businesses and hardship for households.
The Centre for Energy Literacy exists to make energy understandable, practical, and fair — through plain-English education, independent research, and support for people facing fuel poverty.
We do not sell energy.
We do not promote suppliers.
We exist solely to improve understanding and outcomes.
For businesses: energy literacy and resilience
Small and medium-sized businesses are exposed to volatile energy markets, opaque billing structures, and fast-changing regulation.
We help decision-makers understand:
- How energy bills are constructed and where costs arise
- How wholesale markets, contracts, and risk interact
- What “resilience” actually means in practice — financially and operationally
Our resources are factual, neutral, and designed to support better decisions — not to sell products or services.
For households: help with energy costs
Many households struggle not because they are careless, but because the system is difficult to navigate.
We provide:
- Clear explanations of consumer rights
- Practical guidance on reducing energy use safely
- Support pathways for households experiencing fuel poverty
Where we cannot help directly, we work with trusted partner charities to ensure people reach the right support.
Why energy literacy matters
Energy affects every home, every business, and the wider economy — yet it remains one of the least understood systems in daily life.
Improving energy literacy:
- Reduces avoidable costs and disputes
- Improves resilience during market shocks
- Supports fairer outcomes for vulnerable households
- Enables evidence-based public discussion
Understanding energy is not a luxury. It is a form of protection.
