Energy literacy for SMEs

Independent guidance to help businesses understand energy costs, markets, and risk — without sales, suppliers, or commercial agendas.

Who this is for

This page is for UK small and medium-sized businesses that want to make better energy decisions but are frustrated by:

  • Complex and inconsistent energy bills
  • Unclear contract structures and terminology
  • Market volatility that is hard to interpret
  • Sustainability and reporting requirements that lack clarity

If you are responsible for finance, operations, procurement, or strategic planning, energy literacy is a form of risk management.

What we mean by “energy literacy”

Energy literacy is not about switching suppliers or chasing short-term savings.

It is about understanding:

  • How energy prices are formed
  • How contracts and charges actually work
  • Where risk sits within your business
  • How policy and regulation affect future costs

Without this understanding, businesses are forced to make decisions in the dark.

What we provide

The Centre for Energy Literacy publishes independent, non-commercial resources designed to improve understanding of the UK energy system.

Our SME resources include:

  • Clear explanations of how business energy bills are constructed
  • Guides to wholesale markets, contracts, and pricing mechanisms
  • Practical frameworks for thinking about energy risk and resilience
  • Factual coverage of sustainability and regulatory topics

We do not sell energy.
We do not recommend suppliers or brokers.
Our role is educational only.

How our resources are structured

All SME content in the Literacy Hub is:

  • Written in plain English
  • Authored by named contributors
  • Regularly reviewed for accuracy
  • Clearly labelled by topic and audience

Some advanced briefings are available in downloadable PDF format.

Advanced SME briefings

In addition to open-access articles, we publish advanced SME briefings for decision-makers who want deeper insight into how the energy system operates.

These briefings may cover:

  • Market structure and volatility
  • Contract risk and exposure
  • Cost drivers beyond headline unit rates
  • Emerging regulatory or policy changes

Access requires a simple sign-up so we can share future energy market briefings and alerts.

What we do not do

To be clear, the Centre for Energy Literacy does not:

  • Provide energy procurement services
  • Negotiate contracts
  • Offer commercial advice or consultancy
  • Accept referral fees or commissions

This separation is deliberate. It protects independence and trust.

Why this matters for SMEs

Energy costs are no longer a background utility expense.

They affect:

  • Cash flow
  • Pricing decisions
  • Operational resilience
  • Long-term planning

A basic level of energy literacy helps businesses:

  • Ask better questions
  • Avoid preventable mistakes
  • Understand risk before it becomes a problem

Education does not remove uncertainty — but it reduces avoidable harm.
